My parents were fixated on the American presidential election in 2016 — not on the TV, but livestreamed on my mum’s laptop. She clasped her hands together and pleaded with God to let the Republicans — and Donald Trump — win.
Conservative politics in our house weren’t anything new. My parents are Roman Catholics, with steadfast traditional beliefs. I’m one of six children, and I was homeschooled. I didn’t have a solid curriculum. My dad would half-heartedly make a timetable for me and would give me textbooks to figure it out myself.
