Warhorse Studios addressed backlash over alleged AI-driven translation practices during a Reddit AMA, following outrage sparked by the departure of a Czech-to-English translator who said his role was being replaced by AI. The studio insisted AI is only used in early production, not in final game content, and said it is hiring human English translators while teasing a “huge immersive RPG” without confirming its identity.

The critically acclaimed developer behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been under heavy scrutiny from gamers sensitive to the use of AI in video games. Warhorse Studios fired a Czech-to-English translator months ago, which caused massive outrage in the gaming community. Following this incident, Warhorse held a Reddit AMA that devolved into debates over AI.

The studio has been under scrutiny following allegations that it was using AI tools for translation. However, Warhorse repeatedly told users and fans in the AMA that the company doesn’t see AI as a substitute for human work.

For context, in late March, former Czech-to-English translator and editor for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, who had been with the studio since 2022, announced his departure from Warhorse on Reddit. He stated that he had been invited to a meeting and was immediately told that his position would become obsolete as the company moved forward with AI for translation.

Fast forward to Warhorse’s Reddit AMA on r/gaming, where the developers cautiously gave detailed responses to any questions or jabs whenever AI or translation comments came up. They told users:

“We do not see AI as a substitute for human work, and we are currently looking to expand the company, including our translation team. Some team members find AI useful during the early stages of production. However, we do not use AI-generated content in the final game and have no plans to change this in the future.”

In the same Reddit thread, creative director Prokop Jirsa chimed in, stating that the studio is “currently in the process of hiring new English translators, actual humans.” Furthermore, the studio claimed it would keep the same number of human translators for its upcoming project as it did for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Fans still made jabs at Warhorse. One fan asked which team members could easily be replaced by AI. Warhorse’s reply was straightforward: “Hopefully none of us, and never. And that applies to the whole team.”

Beyond the translation and AI controversy, Warhorse also announced in the AMA that the studio was working on “a huge immersive RPG.” However, the studio remained tight-lipped on whether it is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3 or the rumored Lord of the Rings project.
